Life is full of different stresses and divorce is one aspect of life that can definitely get very stressful. When people in Grand Rapids divorce they have to deal with all kinds of possible issues, including child custody, child support, spousal support and property division, to name just a few. Each of these issues can cause a lot of stress in and of themselves and together they can add up to an extremely tough divorce process. While most divorces tend to be hard, many times there are several small things that people do that can make a big difference in their stress level during and after divorce.

One small step after divorce that can have very positive results for parents with small children is to make a change in their cell phone contacts. That’s right; by switching your ex’s name on your phone to “co-parent” it can serve as an effective reminder that you and your ex still need to work together for the benefit of your children, no matter what your feelings for your ex might be. Rather than referring to him or her in a negative fashion, instead try to always refer to your ex as “co-parent.” This can go a long ways in helping you keep your relationship civil for your children’s sake.

Another step that can help is to keep the lines of communication open. For many divorced couples this can be difficult because many people would rather not talk to their ex. Fortunately, in this day and age there are many other ways to communicate, including text messages and email. This can allow you to stay in contact for important matters without having to actually speak to each other. Another simple step that can help take away some of your post-divorce stress or sadness is to remove any reminders of your spouse around the house. One more idea that can help is to avoid going to court every time a disagreement comes up. Instead, give mediation a try. It can be less stressful and save you time and money.

There are several things you can do to make divorce a little easier. While almost all divorces are tough, at least in the beginning, by following these and other helpful tips you can make the recovery process a little less stressful. As an attorney, I know that divorce can be hard, which is why I remain by the client’s side every step of the way. My goal is to help the client get a favorable settlement while at the same time helping him/her to prepare for life after divorce.
