People are arrested for suspicion of operating while intoxicated on a daily basis in the Grand Rapids area. However, just because authorities believe people are drunk that does not mean that they are always guilty of the charges. Unfortunately, some people just accept the charges, and the consequences, without putting up a fight. This can be a big mistake because not everyone who is arrested and/or charged with OWI/DUI has really committed a crime.

A Michigan man is facing drunk driving charges after he was apparently involved in a fiery crash, recently in Traverse City. According to reports the man lost control of his vehicle and slammed into several objects before coming to a stop and catching fire. Authorities say the man was not hurt in the incident but he did allegedly cause severe damage to several pieces of public property, including a light pole and landscape bricks that he reportedly crashed into. Officers say the man lost control of his vehicle while he tried to maneuver through a sharp turn. There were no reports that the man was speeding.

However, authorities did arrest the man on suspicion of driving under the influence after giving him a field sobriety test. Authorities also claim that man was given a breath test, which reportedly came back with a blood-alcohol level of .136 percent, which is above the legal limit. At the time of this report the man had not officially been charged with a crime, only arrested for suspicion of OWI. There were no reports as to whether or not officers found alcohol in the man’s vehicle or whether or not he was given a blood test.

While the circumstances in this situation don’t look good for this man, he has yet to be charged and he is also innocent until proven guilty. Many times, people in this situation feel like they have no hope of avoiding jail time and heavy fines and penalties. However, everyone has the right to his or her due process. There are always several factors that can play a key role in drunk driving cases, and therefore anyone who has been arrested and/or charged with drinking and driving should not give up hope. Before you make any important decisions it is always a good idea to speak with an experienced Grand Rapids OWI/DUI defense attorney if you have been arrested for driving under the influence.
