People from all walks of life enjoy alcoholic beverages from time to time. Unfortunately, sometimes people who have had a little too much to drink get into difficult unforeseen circumstances. These kinds of situations can lead to a person being arrested and charged with driving under the influence. If you have ended up behind the wheel of a vehicle while allegedly being intoxicated then you should seek help from a knowledgeable defense attorney.

A State Trooper is facing OWI charges after officers in Chippewa County say he was driving under the influence while he was off-duty, recently. The trooper’s name had not been released at the time of this report. The trooper was actually pulled over back in July but the court was waiting for the results of his blood-alcohol test to come back before formally filing charges, which happened in August. He was scheduled for arraignment in September. The man’s exact BAC was not reported.

The trooper is facing several charges, including driving with a blood alcohol content of .17 grams or more. Authorities also charged him with possession of a firearm while intoxicated with a BAC higher than .10 grams. Both charges are misdemeanors. If he were convicted of both charges he could spend up to as much as 273 days in jail. Because he faces a high BAC charge the man could also face a fine of as much as $700 and lose his license for a year. Community service is also a possibility. The Trooper could face other penalties as well, including permanently losing his permit to carry a concealed weapon. He also faces potential administrative penalties from the State Trooper’s Office.

Obviously, this man’s situation does not look good. However, as with any DUI case, he is still innocent until proven guilty, which means he should fight for his rights. The first move anyone in this situation in Grand Rapids should make is to contact a knowledgeable DUI/OWI defense attorney for help. An experienced DUI defense understands how the legal process works and he or she will know how to negotiate with the prosecutor in order to get you the best results possible. There are obviously no guarantees in any DUI case, but our team of experienced defense attorneys at the Van Den Heuvel Law Office will do everything in our power to get you a favorable outcome.
